Growing up in my family I was the sweet – but not so smart – child.
I was also fat, just like all the women in my family. Neither of my parents graduated from college. Hell, their mothers didn’t make it to high school (too busy working the farm, then having babies).
I was set to become the sweet, fat woman that would be bulldozed over again and again – just like other women in my family. But life did bring me to college and I eventually earned my Ph.D. in the sciences. A long way to come for the little girl seen as dumb.
The part that makes my heart ache is that I would have traded my hard-won degree in a heartbeat, if I could have just been thin.
